Orchid Island Juice Company Sponsors SLC 4-H Scholarship
Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company is honored to partner with 4-H Youth Development of St. Lucie County in granting a scholarship to future leaders of the community.
The Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus Scholarship enables a qualified member of the 4-H Club, age 15 – 18, to attend a week-long trip to Washington D.C. this summer.
Citizenship Washington Focus is a 4-H leadership program providing high school students with experiences that will make them better citizens. Guided by the 4-H principle of “learning by doing,” participants from across the nation are introduced to the political process through meetings with congressional delegates, discussions of issues affecting their home states, and bill writing workshops. The program also consists of field trips and social engagements.
4-H programs in Florida are facilitated by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) extension campuses. Young people between the ages of 5 and 18 may attend local clubs, school enrichment programs or summer day camps offering a variety of activities, including animal sciences, horticulture, natural resources, marine science, horsemanship, photography and sewing. Adult volunteers lead the programs.
Historically, 4-H can be traced to the early 20th century, when American farmers were unreceptive to new developments in agriculture. Educators discovered that rural youth were willing to try out new ideas and then successfully introduce them to the adults. Later, the emphasis shifted to teaching leadership, citizenship and life skills through programs affiliated with 106 land-grant universities across the country.
Today, there are more than 6 million youth involved in 4-H programs and 60 million alumni.
Candidates interested in applying for the Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus Scholarship should contact their local 4-H leader, visit the IFAS extension campus website or call Sue Munyan at (772)462-1660.
