Orchid Island Juice Company is helping to sponsor an Author Lecture Series to raise funds for Literacy Services of Indian River County. The first lecture/book signing featured Fay Vincent, columnist, essayist, author, former MLB Commissioner and former President of Columbia Pictures.
Twenty percent of American adults are functionally illiterate, unable to fill out an employment application or read street signs. Adult literacy is a significant factor in employment opportunities, economic status and the literacy levels of children raised in the same house. Literacy Services of IRC is a free, confidential program that teaches adults how to read through the efforts of hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
